Partnerships

An important business area for Intersputnik is the launch of advanced telecommunications satellites in cooperation with partner operators to offer a wide range of telecommunications and broadcasting services.

Several projects are under way to procure and deploy telecommunications satellites in Intersputnik’s positions for further joint use. Intersputnik invites interested telecommunications operators and broadcasters to participate in joint projects using Intersputnik’s orbit and frequency resource.

Development strategy

The development strategy approved by the Intersputnik Board is aimed at using Intersputnik’s frequency resource in a number of geostationary orbital positions to establish satellite telecommunications systems in cooperation with the Organization’s member countries. In addition to capacity offered on commercial terms and conditions in the open marketplace, a considerable portion of transponders on the planned satellites will be assigned for government applications in interested Intersputnik member countries.

During the initial phase of the approved strategy, a medium-class spacecraft is planned to be manufactured and launched to cover the Atlantic Ocean region, Europe and Africa. The future satellite will carry C-band wide-beam transponders to provide telecommunications and DTH services. In the future, a slot over the Indian Ocean is going to be used to cover Eastern Europe, Central Asia and East Africa in the Ku band.

Joint satellite projects

In 2007 the Board and the Operations Committee of Intersputnik approved a strategy for the development of the frequency and orbit resource. In 2008 Intersputnik initiated and started working on two large-scale satellite projects in cooperation with Space Communication Ltd. (Israel) and Telkom Indonesia (Indonesia). The first one is to procure and launch to 17E an up-to-date telecommunications satellite together with Space Communication Ltd. under the agreement of September 2008 on the use of frequency assignments at 17E. It is important that another partner under this project is Russia’s largest space systems manufacturer Reshetnev Information Satellite Systems (ISS) that will build the satellite in the interests of the Israeli operator.

The other project is to procure and deploy the Telkom-3 satellite ordered by Telkom Indonesia. Intersputnik acts as the project integrator and coordinator in the interests of ISS. On December 18, 2008 it was announced that ISS had won the tender for the manufacture and launch of Telkom 3.

Based on its experience in installing satellite telecommunications systems, Intersputnik is currently working on major projects aimed at procuring, launching and operating telecommunications satellite on a turn-key basis.
